Keep your home in top shape this fall with these easy home maintenance ideas!

As temperatures start to drop and the days grow shorter, October is a great time for Houston homeowners to prep their homes for fall and the upcoming holiday season.

Here are four simple home maintenance tasks you can do to protect your home during the fall season:

1. Treat the Exterior of Your Home for Pests

When the weather changes, bugs, rodents, and other little critters start looking for warmth—and your home makes the perfect spot. Stay ahead of the problem by spraying your home’s exterior with a pest solution and sealing any gaps around doors, windows, and vents. Remember: You want to schedule pest control before you spot any bugs inside! Seasonal preventative treatments are the best way to avoid unwelcome guests.

2. Check All Outdoor Lighting Systems & Bulbs

With the days growing shorter, good outdoor lighting becomes even more important for safety and visibility—especially with trick-or-treaters heading your way! Take a few minutes to test all the lights on your porch, pathway, patio, etc. and replace any burned-out bulbs. This is also a good time to consider switching to LED bulbs or smart outdoor lighting to save energy and improve visibility during the darker months!

3. Winterize Your A/C System & HVAC Unit

Even though Houston winters are mild in comparison, protecting your HVAC system from leaves, dirt, and wind-blown debris is the key to keeping it efficient and long-lasting. Make sure to clear away any buildup around your outdoor units, replace the air filters, and consider covering your A/C with a breathable cover once it’s no longer in use. You can also schedule an HVAC inspection to make sure your heater is ready for its first use of the season!

 4. Check Your Toilets for Leaks & Plumbing Issues

The fall kicks off the holiday season, bringing family gatherings and more time spent indoors. So, make sure your plumbing can handle all the extra traffic! Check your toilets for leaks, ensure they’re flushing properly, and listen for any running water sounds. Addressing small issues now can prevent bigger (and pricier) plumbing problems later. Pro tip: Try adding a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank—if the color seeps into the bowl without flushing, you’ve got a hidden leak!

A little preventative care goes a long way toward keeping your home running smoothly all season long. With these easy monthly home maintenance tasks, Houston homeowners can stay ahead of seasonal changes and keep their homes cozy, clean, and fall-ready!
