August Home Maintenance Checklist

August 12, 2025
August home maintenance for Houston homeowners

Wrap up summer with these essential August home maintenance tips!

It’s the final stretch of summer—but Houston is just heating up! But consistency is important for a well-kept home, so August is the perfect time to avoid the scorchingly high temps and focus on indoor home maintenance.

Here are four quick and easy indoor home maintenance tasks to help care for your home after a long, hot summer:

1. Deep Clean Your Flooring

After all the rain summer tends to bring to Houston, your home has likely seen its fair share of tracked-in mud and debris. So, now is the perfect time to shampoo or steam-clean your carpets, and give your hard floors a good scrubbing and new coat of protective finish. Not only will your floors look shiny and new, but you’ll also extend their lifespan. Plus, it'll feel great to walk around your home barefoot without getting dirty feet!

2. Lubricate All Door Hinges & Locks

There are very few things more irritating than the sound of a squeaky door… After the heat of summer (and probably more frequent use) the hinges and locks on your doors could probably use a quick tune-up. A small amount of lubricant can keep them operating smoothly and quietly. Just make sure you use the right oil for the material of your door hinges!

3. Organize Your Garage & Outdoor Storage

You’ve put it off long enough… It’s finally time to tackle that garage clutter. All summer long (and maybe even longer), you’ve been stashing various gear, tools, and equipment in the garage for easy access. But don’t you miss when you could actually park your car there? So, pack away the summer gear, organize your lawn tools, and declutter. For Houston homeowners, this can be especially helpful during hurricane season when covered parking offers extra protection from storms. And don’t forget about your backyard sheds or outdoor storage closets! Organizing things now will make it so much easier to find and use things later.

4. Clean the Inside of Your Windows

Cleaning your windows includes more than just the glass panes—don’t forget the inside of your window frames (meaning, you’ll have to open them up), the blinds or shades, and any curtains you have hanging up. Dust, pollen, and dirt can build up quickly, especially if you live in a humid place like Houston, and a good window deep-cleaning will help to not only brighten up your home, but also to improve the indoor air quality!

Keeping up with monthly home maintenance is the best way for a homeowner to protect their investment, prevent major repair problems, and keep daily home-life running smoothly. A little time spent on home maintenance now means fewer headaches later—and a well-kept home you can enjoy all year long!
